Hi! I'm Laurel Cadwallader from Kingsport, TN and Hadley. I'm
sophomore Spanish/English major and a secondary Teacher's Ed minor.
In addition to Spanish, I've studied a little French and a tiny bit
of Swahili. I've worked with children a lot and had a little
experience teaching, and I hope to use what I learn in class either
in a job like the Peace Corps after I graduate and/or as a teacher in
a middle or high school in the U.S.
Hello, my name is Ana Maria Cardenas -Ana-. I live outside
of Boston
and I have studied many languages. I have studied French, Italian,
Spanish, and Portuguese. Erin Steimle is here with me too. She is
from Boston and she speaks Italian and Spanish. We both studied in
Italy last year and I-Ana also went to France. We are both
contemplating going back to Italy, or maybe elsewhere to teach. Ana
has had some experience teaching and she hopes to pursue this in the
future.
Hi - my name is Elizabeth Crook, but I usually go by Liz.
I'm a
freshman, and as of now I'm planning to major in Spanish. I'm from
Baltimore, and I've lived there for pretty much all of my life. As
you could probably guess, I speak Spanish, but that's the only foreign
language I know. I've never actually lived overseas, but I have spent
a lot of time in Central America. After I graduate from Midd, I'd
love to go back down there to teach English for a while. I've never
really done this before in a formal setting, but I have tutored
students in English and Spanish and really enjoyed it. I hope that
taking this class will help me to know what my future students will
need to learn and how I can be an effective teacher.
My name is Carrie Desrosiers, I'm a senior French major. I've
studied
French since high school, so this is my eighth year. I spent the fall
semester of 1997 in Paris. Oh, and I come from New Hampshire. I have
also studied two years of German, here at Middlebury, and I began
Chinese last summer in the language school on campus. I love foreign
languages (obviously!) I had a brief encounter with ancient Greek,
which convinced me I should stick to modern languages, with which I
can actually communicate! I'd like to travel and continue to study
these--or maybe learn new--languages, and have looked at such programs
as the Peace Corps, in which I would like to teach English.
Hello! I'm Steph Farnham. From what I gathered in class the other
day, I am the only Vermonter in the group. I have lived in South
Burlington, VT, 45 minutes away, for all 18 years of my life. I
took Spanish throughout high school but am not currently taking
another language. I have never lived overseas let alone visited for
an length of time. As the daughter of an elementary school teacher I
have spent many hours in the classroom doing informal activities.
Here, at Middlebury, I am still deciding on a major, though I am
leaning towards a joint math and physics major. I hope to teach
either at the elementary or secondary level in the future. I'm taking
this class to help me decide more about who, what, and where I would
like to teach. I enjoy alpine skiing and I am on the indoor and
outdoor track teams here at Middlebury. Visit my tessellation
page.
Hi, my name is Kristy Fullerton, and I am a first year student
planning
to pursue a major in international studies specializing in European
studies. I have studied Spanish and Latin each for two years, but I
have a firmer foundation in French having studied it for five years in
school and having spoken the language with my mother, a French
teacher, at home. I participated in a peer tutoring program in high
school, did some private tutoring, and even worked with some ESL
students after school to help them with any subject in which they were
struggling. From this class I hope to gain skills which will aid me
in teaching others under any circumstances, particularly in situations
abroad. I'm very glad to meet everyone!
My name is Kim Golding. I am a Feb Senior about to graduate in
4
weeks. I am an Italian major with a Spanish minor. I've studied a
year of French at Middlebury, as well. I spent a year living in
Florence, Italy. I am from New Hampshire. I would like to teach
English in an exotic country so that I can earn money and live abroad
again. I am currently interested in exploring India, Argentina,
Turkey or Japan. I want to return permanently to Italy eventually,
but right now I am extremely restless and I need to wander. I am
thinking I would like to try teaching English for a year or two. I
have tutored some Italian.
Hi, I'm Katie Hagel. I'm a junior East Asian Studies major from
Chelmsford, MA. I have been studying Chinese since freshman year and
I just returned from a semester in Harbin, China. I also spent the
summer traveling in China, Thailand, and Vietnam. While I was in
China I taught two English classes, one to adults and another to
twelve and thirteen year olds. It was an exciting and rewardig
experience, even though I didn't really know what I was doing. I'm
basically here to find out what I did wrong. I would like to live and
travel in China and Southeast Asia for a while after graduation, and I
think that teaching English would be a fun and interesting way to
finance that.
Hi there, I'm Joel Hugenberger. I'm
a sophomore joint Geography and
Chinese major from Boston, Mass. I took five years or so of French but
I forget it all and now I'm taking Chinese at the college. I lived in
England for a while when I was young but never in a non-English
speaking environment. Last summer I participated in an informal
one-on-one language exchange in my city with a middle-aged woman from
China with limited English. It was lots of fun but I had few teaching
skills so we just talked and did little actual language learning. I'd
like to continue this in the future, with the skills I learn here.
Hi, I'm Dawn Lehman. I'm a junior environmental studies/conservation
biology major, Spanish minor. I'm from Hawai'i. I've studied some
Spanish both in high school and at Midd. I just returned from an env.
st. semester Costa Rica (classes were in English). I've also studied
French for a year in Midd and I spent two weeks in France where my
brother lives with his two children. I studied some Hawaiian in high
school. I've never taught language formally, but I've done a little
tutoring English with friends in high school and in Costa Rica and my
niece & nephew in France, and I taught a little and translated for
some people from Latin America while stuck in the Greyhound station in
Kansas City, MO for 35 hours trying not to be late for Jterm. I may
return to CR this summer to work with a project which offers
environmental ed as well as English classes to Costa Rican students.
This is Michael Malloy, I'm a first year student and have been
studying French for the past five years or so. I have never lived for
a substantial time in a foreign country, but have spent some time in
Europe on vacation. I hope to add another foreign language in the
next year or so, and to study abroad in the junior year. This class
will hopefully give me a background for missionary and/or volunteer
work I hope to do after college. I am looking towards an
International Studies major, possible with the IPE or European Studies
concentrations. I hail from the "just outside of Boston" area
with
ninety percent of the student body here at Midd and am a member of the
swim team.
My name is Alicia Mohammed. I am senior and am a Geography major
with
a minor in Italian. (I do not have a middle name; my parents were not
too imaginative.) I am from Trinidad (born and raised) and I have
lived in Italy for four months while studying with Middlebury's
program in Florence. I studied French and Spanish in high school but
here at Middlebury, I was drawn to the Italian department and so now I
am considering a Masters in Italian. I am not quite sure how I intend
to use the information I will encounter in this course; teaching has
only recently become a serious consideration of mine. Hopefully this
course may offer some insight into what to expect and how to find my
own little niche.
My name is Meg Morello and I am from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I am
a
sophomore Feb French/English joint major. I also speak Spanish, having
spent a summer in Paraguay, and a semester in Spain. I hope to use
this course to teach English overseas.Visit Meg's Home Page.
Hi, I'm Erika Oh. I'm a junior this year and a biology-psych.
major.
I transferred from a college in California but now live in North
Carolina. I do not speak another language (although I did take high
school Spanish) and feel like an exception in this class! It is great
that so many people do know another language. I have been lucky to
have done some travelling though and lived overseas for short periods
of time. I have not had experience teaching except for a couple
tutoring experiences. I hope to use what I learn in this class after
I graduate in a school overseas, perhaps in Asia.
My name is Kristen Paiva. I am a sophomore from Woodbury Connecticut.
I plan to major in either International Studies or International
Politics and Economics. I speak French Spanish and Latin and can read
and understand Portuguese (I could speak the language as a child but
have lost the ability. Many of my friends and family members are
native speakers of Portuguese. Some of my friends and relatives were
required to take ESL before they could enter into the American school
systems. My Tia Cecilia was a teacher of English as a second language
to Portuguese and Brazilian immigrants in Connecticut.
My name is Jessie Reynolds. I am a sophomore from southwestern
Indiana (That's why I was late to class- ICE!) I am majoring in
molecular biology/biochem with a physics minor. I hope to be family
practice doc in a rural area. I grew up in a town where we only speak
English. Occasionally migrant workers would be in the schools. It
was a real problem trying to communicate. To make a long story short,
I hope to learn about teaching ESL so I can teach English to others,
but mainly to get a general idea about how to communicate with ESL
patients. To finish the questions, I speak a little Spanish, but very
poorly.
My real name is Kimberly Vargas, but everyone calls me "Lola."
It's a
long, complicated story, but basically, it's the Spanish name I was
given when I lived in Spain. I'm a sophomore this year, and am an
International Major. I speak Spanish fluently, and am now working on
French. I tried to teach Spanish when I lived in Spain, but it did not
go too well. I'm taking this class so that when I go to France next
year, I'll be able to make a little extra money by teaching, and
hopefully will be able to travel to other places and support myself.
My name is Sally Blue Wakeman, I am
from Dillon, Montana. I am
majoring in International Studies with a concentration in Latin
America and a discipline in Soc/Anth. I also spent a semester in
Paraguay and know Spanish fairly well. I hope to teach English
somewhere in Latin America after college, but would be happy teaching
in the United States. Click here for Sally's
Home Page.
My name is Erica Wonnacott and I'm
auditing this course with the hope
that it will improve my ability to teach English as a foreign
language. I've been teaching a local group of Bosnian refugees for
the past five years with no training. I now have only two students
but people keep coming.
