Reflections on Language Learning

Take a few minutes to reflect on the following questions. Jot down the answers. In a few minutes you will share them with some of your classmates.

1. Think about your own experiences learning a foreign language.

2. What aspects of the learning experience did you find easy?

3. What aspects were more challenging?

4. What parts of the new language were most difficult for you?

5. Did you have the same level of difficulty with listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, and pronunciation, or were some easier for you?

6. Think about your classroom experiences of foreign language learning. What are some of the methods and techniques that your teachers have used? Which did you find effective? Which did you find less effective.

7. If you have lived overseas in a country where you were not a native speaker of the language, describe your experiences.

8. Based on your own experiences of language learning, what methods and techniques do you think would be most effective in teaching English as a second language?
